Since 1912, the Shaker Heights City Schools have been providing an extraordinary public education for the community’s children. The Shaker Schools Foundation was founded in 1981 to raise charitable gifts, and it was the first in the state of Ohio to support a public school system. Over its 35 years of existence, the Foundation has contributed nearly $3.5 million to the District for enrichment projects.
In 1991, several members of the community sought the Foundation’s advice about a gala that could raise funds for the schools. Their idea, A Night for the Red & White, became a reality on February 27, 1992, and this year the event will celebrate its 25th anniversary. Since 1992, over $2.5 million has been raised and contributed to the district in support of technology, art, humanities, and health and fitness enrichment programs. Jim Karlovec co-founded, developed and ran The Ability Experience’s Journey of Hope while he was a college student at Bowling Green State University. More than 25 years later, Karlovec & Company continues to be a proud supporter of the organization in its efforts to aid people with disabilities. The Journey of Hope consists of approximately 90 college student cyclists, assigned over three teams, who raise money and spread awareness as they bicycle across America each summer on three different routes. Traveling through 32 states on their journey eastward, the three teams celebrate their success in Washington D.C. every August. Each year, The Journey of Hope raises more than $500,000 to aid Americans with disabilities.
Build America is The Ability Experience’s premier construction program. Each summer, 25 college students representing universities from across America travel the country building accessible amenities at summer camps serving people with disabilities. From accessible nature trails to climbing walls, Build America strives to provide equal opportunities for campers with disabilities in order to display their true abilities. Karlovec & Company is a proud supporter and dedicated provider of multiple program facets, which, in some years, includes hands-on construction skills training for the team prior to their trip.
Karlovec & Company is a proud supporter of The Ability Experience, a national nonprofit organization headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, which focuses on raising funds and awareness for people with disabilities. Each summer, Cleveland hosts a team from The Ability Experience’s largest event, The Journey of Hope.
